Changing Needs

Our needs change in the later phases of life. Family relationships can become tense or distant, adult children have their own lives to worry about, work is no longer the main source of fulfillment, bodies decline… Making meaning out of one’s life when things and people seem to recede can be challenging. Anxiety and depression are common symptoms. But that time of life is full of potential, according to Erik Erikson’s stages of development: the challenge is to achieve integrity, as characterized by acceptance, a sense of wholeness, and feeling at peace.
